His design mission was “to create the environment of the future” and he was singularly devoted to its pursuit. Once, when told one of his designs had been ripped off by rivals, he did not erupt in fury: instead, he calmly stated – “We’ll just have to make it better than them.”\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eColombo is especially well-known for his \u003ca title=\"Kartell 4801 armchair\" href=\"http:\/\/www.design55online.co.uk\/kartell-4801-armchair-joe-colombo.html\" target=\"_self\"\u003e4801 armchair\u003c\/a\u003e by \u003ca title=\"Kartell\" href=\"http:\/\/www.design55online.co.uk\/brands\/kartell.html\" target=\"_self\"\u003eKartell\u003c\/a\u003e. Not until 2011 has the technology existed for this iconic piece to be made in plastic (as Columbo intended). Before that it was made from plywood and was not especially affordable.
