Antonio Citterio is truly a gentleman of design. Born in 1950 in a tiny Northern Italian town, he gravitated to stylish seventies Milan – where he was a lot more at home. At the age of 22, before he had graduated from the Politecnico di Milano, the handsome and precocious Citterio had established his own office. Forty years later he has a workforce of over fifty. [OPEN] Citterio has worked with numerous design houses to produce an exceptional range of popular design classics, and his creations can be seen at the MoMA and in the Centre Georges Pompidou. He won the Compasso d’Oro in 1987 and in 1995. A seasoned hand, Citterio does not rely of the ephemerality of a particular “look” – rather he seeks to tease out the dormant potential of a product or material – a highly modernistic corollary of the American Native Indian belief that a piece of wood inherently contained the sculpture it would become. One thing is for certain – Citterio’s work has stood the test of time. His Spoon swivel chair from Kartell is gorgeous and utile. The Battista trolley from the same company is like having Kate Moss in the room – you just can’t stop looking at it.
